Butterfly Automata Instructions

Supplies Needed:

  • Clothespin
  • decorative paper
  • butterfly wing template
  • thin black cardstock
  • white cardstock strip
  • scissors
  • glue

Instructions:

(See Video Instructions to the right)

Step 1. Fold your colored cardstock in half. Trace the half butterfly template (placing the body half along fold). Cut.

Step 2. Use the black cardstock sliver to make antennae and attach to the end of the clothespin (the side that would hold clothes if we were using it for its original purpose). Glue the butterfly to the clothespin, covering a portion of the antennae. (Note: the center of the butterfly wings need to be closer to the front of the clothespin than the hinge spring.)

Step 3. Holding the body of the butterfly firmly to the clothespin, bend the wings so they stand straight up away from the clothespin. (Did you know that one visual difference between moths and butterflies is that, when at rest, the moth has its wings flat to the surface and the butterfly holds its wings up and together?)

Step 4. Use approximately 1/4 of the white cardstock strip to attach the upright wings to the bottom of the clothespin. Cut the strip to length. Fold a small tab at the top. Glue it to the lower end of the wing. When dry, attach it to the bottom of the clothespin (attaching it up the side of the clothespin is usually helpful but be careful to attach it ONLY to the lower half). Repeat on the other side.

Step 5. Test. Make adjustments. Decorate.
